37th Annual Black Hills Quilt Show
June 10, 11 and 12, 2011, at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Rapid City
9 to 7 Friday (extended hours), 9 to 5 Saturday, 10 to 4 Sunday
Admission: Free for BHQG members (must present membership card)
$5 per day for adults or $10 for 3-day pass
www.blackhillsquilters.org.

Our show had more than 500 quilts in 2010 and we want to meet or beat that this year. If you like looking at quilts, please put yours in the show – there’s no such thing as “mine’s not good enough.”

We’re excited to welcome Elly Sienkiewicz, expert in Baltimore Album quilts. She is teaching a one-day appliqué technique class Thursday, Friday and Saturday and there are still openings. Contact Karen Lipp for price and details. Elly will sign books during our extended show hours Friday night from 5 to 7. She’ll also present the program at the banquet Saturday night.

SPREAD THE WORD: People won’t know about our wonderful show unless we tell them. Give bookmarks to your friends, your hairdresser, your church office and anyone else you can think of. Melissa Grote (343-6546) has all the printed materials and also needs help with last-minute poster distribution at local hotels.

Deadlines: All entry forms must be received by Tuesday, May 5. Forms are available on our website, in local quilt shops and from Carol Doyle (342-4126). Bring quilts to the civic center on Wednesday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pickup will be shortly after the show closes on Sunday, June 12, around 5 p.m. Quilts will not be released without claim check forms.

Set-up and Take-down: Set-up begins when quilts are turned in, Wednesday, June 8, at 10 a.m., and continues Thursday, June 9, from 9 a.m. until completed. Come help string sheets on poles and distribute, arrange and hang quilts. Help is also needed immediately after the show – this goes amazingly fast. Mary Ann Clark and Bev Peterson will be in charge.

Judged and non-judged categories: There is no fee for entries in non-judged categories. The fee for judged quilts is $10 per item for BHQG members and $15 per item for other people. Payment must be received with the entry form. Klaudeen Hansen will be our judge again this year.Viewers on Friday and Saturday will choose Best of Show and the winners in the non-judged categories. All judged and non-judged quilts are eligible for Best of Show. Winners will be announced at the banquet.

Special exhibits: Guild members’ Baltimore-style appliqué work will be displayed in honor of Elly Sienkiewicz’s visit. If you have a quilt or even a few blocks, contact Darlene Huettl (343-6589), Joyce Ketterling (718-5397), Carol Doyle or Celia Bradley. We will also have a group from the Sun Prairie, Wis., guild.

BHQG Fabric Challenge: : Don’t show anyone your piece: These should be kept “secret” so voters don’t know who made which. (Names will be on them Sunday.) Return your finished project and its entry form to Laurie Widner (343-4129) by Tuesday, June 7, or bring it to the civic center Wednesday, June 8.

Awards Banquet: Your printed ticket may say it’s June 12, but it is not! The event is Saturday night, June 11, upstairs in the civic center Alpine Room. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for cash bar. The menu includes Champagne chicken and chocolate cake. Elly Sienkiewicz will present a program on Baltimore appliqué quilts, followed by the reveal of the 2012 raffle quilt and announcement of awards. Tickets are $27 and available on Tuesday workdays ,monthly meeting, in some local quilt shops, or call Rhonda Jenner (341-4497).

Quilt Show 2011

As many of you already know, Elly Sienkiewicz will be teaching during our Quilt Show June10-12, 2011. Elly is know for her wonderful applique' quilts and books of the Blatimore Album style. It will be an honor to have her here. She will also be present Friday evening of the quilt show for a book signing.

Karen Lipp has begun registering people for Elly Sienkiewicz's classes during the Quilt Show in June. Please get in touch with Karen in person or mail your check to her (her address is in the Guild book). Make the check out to BHQG ,$65.00 for members and $85 for nonmembers. Please include which day you would like to be registered for, Thursday, Friday or Saturday, your name, address, phone number and email (if you have one). Class materials will be mailed out when we get them.

The class will be the "Victorian Vase of Flowers" block. Karen has a picture and you can see the class description on Elly's website. www.Applique'withElly.com . Registration is now open to everyone.

It is not really a beginners class. I think anyone signing up for the class would get the most out of it by learning the basics of needle turn applique' in the next few months. There will be Beginning Applique' classes after the first of the year at Quilt Connection. You are also welcome to come to the guild workdays at Faith Lutheran church for help.

Hope everyone has lots of quilts planned for another great show. Watch the website for updates.

Class block was changed due to an oversight on my part. The other class was a two day class.

Rebecca

IT'S UFO SEASON AGAIN!!

What, you may ask is a UFO?
For those of you who are new to the ways of the Black Hills Quilters Guild,
A UFO is an Un Finished Object.
Any quilt project which you began before August 1, 2008
(and is still waiting to be completed)

If you need a little extra incentive to tackle some of those UFO's,well here it is! Go to the quilts show page and print out a contract for the UFO's you think you might be able to get done by next Quilt Show, June 5,6 &7, 2009.

Turn in or mail to Rosa Lea Grav,Ginger Jahner or Rene' Suiter. Finish and enter your UFO for tiny prizes and the chance to win the Traveling UFO Trophy for a year. Severe penalties for non-completion of the registered items. ( I think it is $1.00 which gets donated to Hospice House.)

UFO contracts must be turned in by May 12!

The Round Robin
Our New Adventure in Quilting

Starting in February, we will begin work on our new voluntary project.

First, here is a general description of a round robin quilt for those who may not have heard of them. It’s a quilt that is made by a group of quilters and is a variation of friendship blocks.  To start, everyone makes her own block for the center.  The blocks are passed to the next person in the group who will add the first border.  Then the next quilter adds the second.  This usually continues until there are four borders that have been sewn by four different quilters.  The quilter who made the center block then gets the quilt top back to keep and finish.

Ben Franklin Store will be moving to a smaller store space and will no longer have room for our library cabinet. On Tue January 6, we will be moving the cabinet to the community room at the Faith Lutheran Church. There will be a combination lock on the cabinet. The combination will be in your newsletter or contact any board member. Please write it down, maybe on the back of your membership card. The library cabinet will be available on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 8-3 ,Sunday 8-11:30 and during evening Guild meetings. If you cannot get to the church during these hours, perhaps you can ask someone to check out or return books for you. Sorry for any inconvenience, this was the only solution we could come up with on short notice.

Christmas Boots for the Troops

On 6-28-08 the RCJournal did an article about Peg Seljeskog of RC going to Langstuhl Hosp. in Germany to volunteer at the Wounded Warrior Ministry Center, which is supported by the Landstuhl Hospital Care Project. I learned that LHCP (langstuhlhospitalcareproject.org) is a non-profit organization that provides comfort & relief items(clothing, toiletries & items to enhance morale & welfare) for troops who become too sick, injured or wounded to be treated in the field hospitals in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan. After care there, they either return to the field or are airlifted to USA. It sounded like a good home for some of our stockings.I contacted LHCP and learned that they have items to fill the stockings and woud be happy to receive some. If we come close to making the number we made last year, maybe we'll have enough to cover our troops in the field and send some to LHCP. If you are interested in making stockings at home, there are some cut out at the church or you can use the Elenor Burns "Christmas at Bear Paw Ranch" book. It's the one on page 60. We are not strip piecing them, just cut out of 1 fabic.
